Frequently asked questions
about garage door repairs
Q. My garage door spring and/or cable is broken, what should I do?
Broken springs and cables are under a lot of tension. This tension can range between 50-250 Ft/Lbs per spring or cable. This tension makes them very dangerous to work with. Broken springs and cables can cause severe injury and must be handled by a professional.
Q. My garage clicker (aka remote) isn’t responding.
We get this one a lot. First, try changing your batteries in the remote. You’d be surprised at how often this is overlooked. If the battery is good, it may be that your motor has simply become unplugged. Yes, another quick check can save you lots of time and energy. If the batteries are good and the motor is getting power, you’re probably looking at a broken motor. If this is the case you can temporarily open your door by hand using the red emergency string. And then call us to install a new motor.
Q. I drove into my garage door, what do I do?
You’d be surprised how often this happens. Before trying to do anything, you need to assess the damage that’s been done. Are the door panels bent? Is there a hole through the door? Have the tracks been bowed or compromised? Depending on the severity, opening the door after it’s damaged could result in personal injury, or further damage to the garage door panel, track, hardware, or rollers. Often, after an accident like this it is necessary to replace the affected panel(s) and fix any damaged hardware as soon as possible. Call our emergency number and we can be there (often within the hour) to get your garage fixed as soon as possible.
Q. My garage door won’t open or close.
If it won’t open, most likely your spring/cable is broken, and has left your door as dead weight and needs repair. If your door won’t close, check that the photo-eyes are aligned and nothing is in the way while checking the power cords for any damage.
Q. I’m in an emergency, how fast can you get here?
We can be there and are usually able to fix your issue within an hour. At Homestead, emergency calls always take priority.
