Frequently asked questions
about garage door installation
Q. How do I install a garage door spring or cable?
Please DO NOT attempt to adjust or replace a garage door spring or cable. Garage door springs and cables are under a tremendous amount of tension and they are very dangerous. Only a professional will have the right tools and the experience needed to make sure the right spring for your door is installed at the correct tension.
Q. How do I install my garage door panels?
First, you need 2 people (3 if you have never installed panels before). You start at the bottom and work your way up, installing the hardware as you go. To begin, put weather stripping on the bottom panel and prep your hardware so it is nearby. As you work your way up, only put the middle brackets and one side of rollers on, the next side of rollers will be attached after as you have to angle the rollers to fit into the tracks.
If you are putting on the metal track as you go, attach the sides loosely to the house framing so you can check alignment once all the doors are installed, and ensure no panels are scraping against the house. The final step is attaching your cables or springs to the new doors, and as mentioned before, the springs/cables are dangerous and should be done by a professional.
Q. How do I put in a new garage opener/motor?
Make sure your door is closed, the opener is unplugged, and the arm is disengaged. Next, safely take down the old machine, and proceed to follow the instructions given with your new opener. Don’t install any pre-used equipment and contact a professional to make sure you have the right opener for your application.
Q. How do I replace a broken roller?
When you need to replace a broken roller, always choose high quality steel rollers. (Plastic rollers will break down and wear out much faster.) When the door is in the down position and disengaged, you can remove the old roller and install the new roller. For safety, this is best done with 2 people. Please note that in older doors the rollers are structural and should be replaced by a professional.
